1/31/2024 0 Comments Duran duran 80s![]() Their lyrics and style just spoke more to me and my teenage angst. So, I was more with the death rock crowd after a year or two being into Duran Duran and INXS because I was a huge Cure fan and also a big fan of bands like Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Jesus and Marychain, The Cult, etc. I dabbled in both styles but my frustrations with the 80's status quo Regan era and cheesy 80's neon clothing kids and "normal" people lead me toward post-punk, punk music as I aged. ![]() In my teenage circle of friends there were death rockers and their were new romantics. In my early teenage years, I was more a Duran Duran fan and liked other bands like Japan, Bananarama, Wham, INXS and more "main stream" indie and new ro' style music. Duran Duran were more about fashion, decadence, and 80s pop culture whereas The Cure were pretty much the antithesis of that.Īs a teenager, I liked the sound coming out of my speakers from both bands. So I get where Robert is coming from with that statement. I liked The Cure more because they had more a punk aesthetic in their lyrical view and approach to things. But sadly, how much longer?īeing a fan of both bands during that time, it was really a mindset thing. So they have officially been retired by me to the dust bin of history.īy the way, The Cure still sound amazing, Robert Smith is as good and haunting as ever, and New Order are maybe more popular than ever and remain my favorite band (along with The Cure) to see live that managed to cheat time and sound as good as ever. It was difficult to even recognize some of the old favorites, the band was not tight, mix was terrible. I DID see them again just for nostalgia in Florida in 2015. I basically lost interest with them and their music after that. After a few songs, we gave up and sat down and suffered through the rest of noise. I paid a lot for great 5th row seats too. The entire audience was teen girls, standing and screaming constantly throughout the show. ![]() I REALLY got to know who they were at a concert I attended with a friend in 1984 in NYC. WLIR, the great Long Island New Wave radio station never really explained their growing audience among teen girls, so I listened to them on the same level as my other favorites at the time, like The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, etc. Their material then became a bit less consistent with the creativeness and well constructed songs. With their first album or two, I placed them on the level of other 80's pop- New Wave bands I enjoyed. I've derived much more pleasure over the years from the Cure than DD and had my mind blown at one of their shows in the 90's.īut it is simply not true that DD were hated in the 1980's - they were huge (and a very important part of the culture of mid-80's music.) This was the same time Lou Reed was filming expensive motorcycle commercials and who has ever been more glamorous than post Let's Dance Bowie? I mention these two (beloved artists) as they are heroes to Robert Smith. The videos may have emphasized consumerism and glamor - but the songs, were regular songs. It didn't matter who you were (or what you liked) the premier of a a new Duran Duran video was a much watch event. Their films pushed boundaries, social mores and exposed injustices. Video making was in its infancy and they made some of the best. The impact of MTV can not be overstated - DD made beautiful, intriguing and expensive James Bond-style short movies, which featured beautiful models and exotic locales. Just to be clear though, for those who weren't yet around - Duran Duran was a massively successful band.
